Since 1994, our patented SHREDDER Filter has protected thousands of homes against zebra mussel infestation throughout the United States and Canada. Because the SHREDDER is installed at the offshore end of the water intake, zebra mussels are completely prevented from entering the water system, eliminating costly repairs and expensive cleaning of your plumbing. 

Our unique, replaceable filter cartridge keeps maintenance costs to a bare minimum. Annual replacement of the filter cartridge ensures maximum efficiency and allows for uninterrupted, low-cost protection of your entire water system. 

Sometimes, filters can put too much demand on a system's pump, causing a decrease in water volume and pressure. We worked with Gould Pumps, a recognized industry leader, to solve this problem. Extensive tests show our filters easily accommodate a minimum flow rate of 80 gallons per minute and are not affected by strong system back flushing.  

Primär Filtration has worked with GOULDS Pumps, FERRO Corporation, and ACRES International Corporation to test and evaluate the water flow and biological effectiveness of our ceramic filters. The field study found that the SHREDDER Filter effectively excludes all settleable and shelled-form zebra mussel veligers from the water flow. Additionally, the tests from FERRO and ACRES provide a significant confidence that the filter removes all settleable veliger forms. 

The ceramic filter of the SHREDDER SF-1 and SF-2 is made from Centered Alumina that has been fired in a kiln up to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The filter medium is made up of sharp, jagged pieces of metal that tear at the soft sided, free floating, platonic larvae, also known as veligers. This prevents the veliger from ever entering the water system. The porousness of the filter medium allows for high flow rates (minimum of 80 gallons per minute) while maintaining the required filtration.
